Employment Trends

When looking for a job it’s obviously important to have clear aims about what you want to do and where you want to work but it can help to be flexible – consider other options if they present themselves.

Nanny Sharing

Nanny sharing can provide an affordable, very cost effective solution to the childcare dilemma for many parents. It is popular with parents as a way of giving children opportunities for companionship and helping reduce costs. The arrangement normally involves a daily nanny and there are a number of possible combinations e.g. the nanny could be based in one of the houses or alternate between the two, or she could work part time for two employers individually. Although nanny shares may look complicated to set up and maintain, with enough planning and a good contract, trouble free arrangements are possible. There are advantages to both sides, e.g. The nanny earns a higher wage and the family benefits by reducing the costs, an only child has more company and the nanny has the opportunity to look after more than one child. For more information visit our section on Nanny Sharing

Nannies with own child

We have many nannies registered who have many years of formal childcare experience and who now have a child of their own - and we have a lot of success placing such nannies with families. Positions that may be suitable are very often part time (or full time) positions that will allow you to bring your own child with you to work (either all the time or just on occasions). This can be a good childcare solution in many cases but its feasibility may depend on the ages and numbers of children involved.

Part time working

We find that part time positions are on the increase and there may be possibilities to combine two part time positions to give yourself 4 or 5 days per week – this can sometimes work out well for you financially.

Ofsted Childcare Register (OCR)

At present parents can access financial support through Employer-supported childcare vouchers and the childcare element of Working Tax Credits if they use a nanny that is registered with Ofsted. We are finding that more and more employers are wishing to employ an Ofsted Registered Nanny - Click here for more information.

Different Childcare Roles

Full Time

Live out nannies

Normally work a 10 hour day, Monday to Friday. They do not normally do baby sitting unless this is agreed in advance, and they would need to be paid extra. They can be in sole charge of the children and they perform “nursery duties” i.e. doing the children’s washing and ironing, keeping their rooms tidy, clearing away the toys, cooking for the children and clearing up in the kitchen afterwards.

Live in nannies

Normally work a 10 or 11 hour day, Monday to Friday, together with 2 nights baby sitting included. They can be in sole charge of the children and they perform “nursery duties” i.e. doing the children’s washing and ironing, keeping their rooms tidy, clearing away the toys, cooking for the children and clearing up in the kitchen afterwards. Most nannies will not do extra domestic duties, as they are primarily childcarers.

Mother's Help

If you are newly qualified or wish to gain further experience, there are other opportunities to explore, such as being a mother’s help or baby sitting. A Mother’s Help can be live in or live out, part time or full time.

You do the same sort of hours as a nanny however the difference between a mother’s help and a nanny is that as a mother’s help you do not yet have enough experience to be left in constant sole charge of children. You normally work alongside the mother, caring for the children. You are not a cleaner, and so are not expected to do household duties, but you may be required to do light duties such as the family shopping, or loading and unloading the family washing. These duties should be discussed in advance with you.

Nanny/Housekeeper

Where the job of caring for the children and managing the household are combined so that the nanny is also responsible for shopping, cooking, light housework and supervision of other household staff where necessary.

Part Time

If you would prefer to work part time then Network 0 to 5 probably has a better chance of finding you a family with the same requirements than anyone else. If anyone can find you that part time child caring job that you are looking for then we are confident that we can.

One, Two or Three Days per week?

We get many requests from families looking for part time nannies - anything from one day (or even less!) up to three or four days per week. So however small the amount of work you may be looking for - or whatever combination of days you are needing - it is always worth giving us a call.

Before and/or After School care

Sometimes seen as one of the more difficult requirements that parents need to solve and one in which we have a great deal of experience! A lot may depend on the total sum of their requirements. If they need before and after school care, full time childcare during all school holidays and half terms, standby care in case of emergencies and possibly some element of housekeeping then it may be possible to incorporate all this to produce a reasonable salary level and style of job that may well appeal to certain nannies. We tend to find that nannies interested in this kind of position may well be older, or maybe involved in some other training, work or activity that they can pursue while the children are at school, or nannies with a child of their own.

If parents just need very part time out of school care then again it is possible - it may be that the small amount of work they are offering may well link up with some other part time work the nanny has, or it may be suitable for a teaching assistant or similar or possibly a nanny with her own child or an older semi-retired person who only wants part time work with a low level of hours.

Temporary positions

We very often have many different jobs available on a temporary basis. These can range from just a few days to longer contracts e.g. covering a nanny’s maternity leave

Holiday Cover

Nannies or Mother’s helps for temporary work over school holidays or half terms are very often ex nannies who are now in teaching, teacher training or other further education and therefore free over these times.

Emergency Child Carers

If you are looking for flexible hours, varied work then register with our Emergency and Temporary Childcare Service. This is a unique service, which would appeal to part-time nannies, semi-retired qualified child carers, nannies between jobs, or qualified nannies that would like to make some extra money.

Maternity nannies

If you are a qualified Nursery Nurse (CACHE, BTEC or NAMCW), Registered Nurse or Midwife and/ or have experience that would enable you to support mothers and babies in their own homes then you could work as a Maternity Nanny (and take the ONC Maternity Practitioner Award). Maternity Nannies attend the family home after discharge from hospital and live in for the first four to eight weeks after birth to support and care for both mother and new baby.

Typically Maternity Nannies give an expert service in all areas of infant care especially feeding and sleep routines, weight gain patterns, dealing with minor ailments and maintaining good hygiene. Care and support of the post natal mother and helping with breast feeding is especially important.

Maternity Nannies could also take on the role of supporting families with other siblings by accommodating school runs and other of the children's activities. These nannies will also be on hand to support and advise mothers in the care of the newborn when she needs it most.

Maternity Mother's Helps

Mother's helps will be experienced in childcare (particularly with babies) as well as being willing to assist in household duties and the general running of the home. This service will include light housework, shopping, cooking, ironing as well as school runs and general assistance in childcare.

Proxy Parenting

Is a nanny who will take full 24-hour responsibility for the house and childcare arrangements during parents absence on business trips or holidays.

Babysitting

These are childcarers who look after children in the evenings. This is usually in the parents own home for a short period of time whilst they are out for the evening or could be at other venues (e.g. wedding functions, hotels etc.)
